Williard Metcalf in his studioBegun in 1991, the Willard L. Metcalf catalogue raisonné is still in preparation. Spanierman Gallery is still interested in locating works by Willard L. Metcalf and is also searching for unpublished letters, papers, diaries and photographs on this important American Impressionist. We encourage those people with works by the artist to contact us.

The catalogue raisonné, the first to be published on the artist, will be an invaluable definitive and historical reference source, providing complete documentation on all of Metcalf’s oil, pastels and watercolors. The catalogue raisonné is a free service. Its purpose is to provide a major contribution to scholarship on the artist and to add to the body of greater knowledge on American art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. To have a work studied for the publication, please fill out and return a Metcalf catalogue raisonné form to us or contact Ira Spanierman.

The exhibition that this 152-page color catalogue accompanied presents works from all phases of the career of Willard Metcalf (1858-1925), a noted American Impressionist and member of the Ten American Painters. The works included range from Metcalf’s first paintings of New England, to his images rendered in Europe and North Africa in the 1880s, to vibrant Impressionist depictions of New England for which he became known as the “poet laureate of the New England hills.”
